A “Barefoot Community”, Fair Harbor is a laid back, informal, bustling community. The architecture is as varied as its residents, from humble 1940’s cottages to spacious modern homes. A few of Fair Harbor’s 350 houses were built in the 1920s, but most were built in the 1970s. Many of New York’s professionals flock to this lovely, lively town. Whether with children or single, the residents are here for relaxation and fun.

The magnificent view from the u-shaped harbor and marina from the dock is one of the best on the island. Everyone gathers here in the evening to toast the setting sun or gaze at the glorious clouds over the bay. Kids run around and sell their wares while adults mingle and share a glass of wine at Le Dock. Fair Harbor is the perfect town for single professionals and for families with kids who all like to run free.
It is easy to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle here. The lifeguarded bay beach is a gathering place for parents to relax and chat while the kids swim out to the raft or run off steam in the newly renovated playground.
Unfriendly’s ice cream store is nearby for refreshments when the going gets tough.
The Lifeguard-patrolled ocean beach is wide, sandy and clean. A pair of shoes is rarely spotted in this town.

The center of town is on the bayfront with the excellent Pioneer Market, Unfriendly’s ice cream stand, Corliss General Store, the Loading Dock liquor store, pizza shop, post office, and firehouse. Community events are frequently held at the fire house.
Le Dock restaurant on the bay front has a spectacular view and fine dining. Be sure to make reservations for this popular restaurant. Staying home? Le Dock will deliver.
The first-rate volunteer fire department services Fair Harbor, Dunewood and Lonelyville, its close neighbors.
Although there are almost 400 homes, Fair Harbor is a closely knit community, with a strong and active membership in the Fair Harbor Community Association. They oversee the town services, including choosing the doctor, lifeguards, and maintaining the marina. They sponsor the Community BBQ, Kids Movie Nights and Music on the Dock to bring people together.
There are many year rounders here who send their kids to the renowned Woodhull School.
